This workshop is part of the Modern Research 501 workshop series. The Modern Researcher 501 is a workshop series aiming to provide early career researchers with tips, tools, and best practices across the research lifecycle.

Altmetrics can tell you more about the attention given to research and the influence of research. It can indicate how many people have engaged with a piece of scholarship. The data can help you understand how and why a piece of research is being discussed and shared by scholars and by the general public. Some of the data gathered through altmetrics can show you that research is changing a field of study, or it may have effects on government policy or society. It should be noted that all metrics (including citation-based metrics) are simply indicators of use. They can measure different types of attention, but they do not provide explanations of the data.

The series is hosted weekly by Emily Bongiovanni, Scholarly Communications Librarian, and Roel Snieder, Director of the Center for Professional Development Education.
