Modern Researcher 501: Collaboration and Team Dynamics *ONLINE *
Title: Everything (almost!) I learned on collaboration and team dynamics, I got from rotting my feet in the jungle of the Philippines
Presented by Vincent Saubestre, CEO and President, Total EP Research and Technology
Workshop abstract:
I present key learnings from adventure racing to mount successful collaboration projects in the business world. On the spur of the moment, and because Total (Elf) was organizing an adventure race to promote its business in Asia, we decided to enter a team of colleagues and race against “professional athletes” in the inaugural Elf Authentic Adventure Race (1999) – these were the heydays of the EcoChallenge on the Discovery Channel. I describe my participation in a full year project culminating in 12 days of hurt in the jungle and ocean off the Phillipines and a medical aftermath. I have drawn on this experience to understand what makes collaborative projects work and others not – experience I used in Canada applied to a novel collaborative innovation effort and throughout my career as a professional nomad working for a large international corporation.
